Coal: THE PERFORMANCE

The performance was run on a zoom call that happened between International Welsh Artist Bridget Evans and the audience of University of Creative Arts, Farnham. The Performance lasted approximately over 2 minutes. The 2 minute video performance was recorded live and showed Artist Bridget Evans chiselling away at a large lump of coal using a chisel and hammer.

The vision of the coal platformed on a small table in a very clean domesticated home showed the relationship between the mining industries. Showing a confliction of both domestic and industrial work and how the home as well as shift work was managed.

The coal was plinthed on a sequin material, that reflected the surface of the coal. This gave a imagery of black reflected discs upon the artists skin, tools and coal itself. The workman strike during the 1980s over the cutbacks and shut down of mining establishments. Each strike and noise of the hacking away of coal reflected those closures.

Between the heavy chiselling and the action of the strike that created the ash and chips of coal. The glamorous reality of work and life within the home was not pretty. The whole symbolic actions are really challenged and watching in difficulty to strike the coal was proof this piece was hard to break!
